I never forget the cries of my best friend when she called me on my cell phone at work over two years ago. She was sobbing and trying to tell me something, but I was not able to understand her. All I could tell was that something was terribly wrong, and my heart was pounding uncontrollably and my hands were shaking as I tried to calm her down. Finally I heard the words “Breast Cancer” and suddenly remembered her breast biopsy a few days earlier.
 
What followed were very unhappy days with surgery and removal of her left breast and after her recovery from surgery, a series of chemotherapy sessions. I was with her every step of the way and saw the worry and pain she had to endure. Once the shock of surgery was over, we then had to deal with the idea and effects of chemotherapy. I took my friend to chemotherapy sessions and stayed with her at nights and weekends as she battled her disease and chemotherapy.
 
She had started to lose some hair due to chemotherapy, but I never forget the day when she was in the shower and started to sob, yelling that her hair was falling off. I hugged her as she said she wanted her head shaved off. The shaved head was very cold and she would shiver at times, but then she would sweat uncontrollably most of the other times. I was looking everywhere for a hat or some form of head gear for her, but she had allergies and could not use anything synthetic. She was also easily getting sick because her immunity system was down with all the drugs she was taking. We tried covering her head with soft cotton scarves or with cotton towels. She seemed to like the cotton towels the best as it absorbed sweat and protected her head also from the cold. However, she still could not get out of the house because nothing we could find to cover her head was comfortable, functional and flattering.
 
As I was helping my best friend during these most difficult times, I started to do research for chemotherapy head wear and soon realized that there really were not any good products available for patients suffering from hair loss.
